Fork mount vs upright

If you’re an avid cyclist who likes the idea of carrying your bikes on the roof of your vehicle, then you will do well to look at Yakima’s range as they have a great reputation for manufacturing bike racks which are quality, durable and sturdy.

The Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount is a high end roof top rack from Yakima designed to carry one bike. Its standout feature is that the mount holds on to your bikes wheel, not the frame so you don’t need to remove your bikes front wheel to mount the bike thus providing a high level of convenience. Here, we’ll delve into some of the HighRoller’s key features to help determine if it’s the right choice for you.

Features of the Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount

Capacity for 1 bike
Compatibility: square bar, round bars, most factory bars
Recommended for hauling bikes- No Locks included
1 year Manufacturer Warranty

Loading and Unloading

Mounting and un-mounting your bike is quick and easy due to the way Yakima have cleverly designed this rack.

It takes about five minutes in total.

To load a bike, first you need to rotate the front hoop upwards, and then set the sizing to match the size of your bikes front wheel. To do this, you just flip the lever down then move it up to the appropriate position then close the lever. The sizing is clearly indicated, so this is easy to follow. Next, you need to go to the rear of the rack and release the wheel strap by pressing the red lever.

Now you’re ready to lift your bike onto the rack. The rear wheel tray slides back and forth, so this makes getting the bike correctly positioned easy to do.

Get the rear wheel into the tray to take some of the weight off the bike, and then guide the front wheel into the front hoop. Now the bike is position, you need to lift the rear hoop into place, which then secures the front wheel. A micro ratchet is built into the hinge, so this holds the wheel into place allowing you to secure the rear wheel with ease and not worry about the bike falling out of position.

Next, you need to tighten the dial underneath the rear hoop; this gives extra grip onto your front wheel to keep it secure. Finally, to secure the rear wheel you need to insert the strap into the buckle, and then use the lever to tighten it securely.

On The Road

On the road, the HighRoller performs really well. The bike is kept very secure and stable; there is no sway or wobble even when you mount a bike with larger tires.

Security and Compatibility

An SKS cable is integrated, but unfortunately SKS lock cores are not included so if you want to securely lock the rack to your vehicle and lock your bike to the rack then you have to purchase these separately.

Also bear in mind if your vehicle has a factory rack crossbar, then you need to purchase Mighty Mounts separately for the rack to be compatible because only standard mounts are included.

Final Thoughts

The Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount is an excellent bike rack. It’s sleek and compact, in addition to being stable, secure and easy to use. Due to its clever design, you don’t need to worry about the possibility of your bikes frame being scratched because it holds on to your bikes wheel, not the frame.

On the downside, it doesn’t come with SKS lock cores so if you want your bike and rack to be kept secure you will have to pay out additional costs.

Overall, I recommend the HighRoller if you’re looking for a versatile high end roof top rack, but don’t mind spending that bit extra for security.
